Retrofit

After some years of productive use, even a well-maintained machine needs to be overhauled or modernized. Since quality requirements and rationalization measures are constantly increasing, it is not enough to “just” update the existing machine tool. When changing the given parameters or expanding the machine with new components, you also have to constructively reevaluate and redesign its concept. With these measures, we often achieve more efficiency than with a standard new machine. Therefore, a retrofit of your old machine is often an economic alternative to purchasing a new machine.

Retrofit of a Wohlenberg lathe

Very often, large lathes are used to process workpieces with a center distance that is far below the maximum. This leads to one of the most common machine damages – uneven wear across the entire length of the bed. In this case, guide play also increased, which then caused the machine to operate less precisely. For the much needed retrofit, we uncovered the machine bed, refitted the guide rails and ground all guideways. This process can be repeated multiple times without the already existing hardened steel strips losing any of their temper. Since the bed had been readjusted, all components moving along the machine bed also had to be realigned. This is why the support, tailstock and bezels were fitted with new guideway covers and set up to maximum center height. Now, this machine is back to its delivery condition for a good number of years. When it comes to long-term use of solid and affordable machines, this is a very profitable investment
